Standards in English Language Teaching and Assessment Featured Speaker: The First Standards-Based English Textbook for Egyptian Primary One Students: The Agony and the Ecstasy This presentation reports on the process of developing the first standards-based Egyptian EFL textbook for primary one students. It is a process that is challenging as well as rewarding .The unique features of the book such as the philosophy it adopts, the activity-based communicative methodology it follows, the integration of concepts and consolidation of skills, attitudes and knowledge and values across all subjects that it ensures will be highlighted. Components of both the Student's Book and the Teacher's Guide will be discussed, underscoring the link between the standards and the indicators as reflected in the developed units. This presentation will also focus on the challenges faced by the authors and their attempts to overcome them. Lessons learned from the whole process will be shared with the audience, and handouts will be provided. Bio Zeinab El-Naggar is professor of ELT methodology and director of the Center for Developing English Language Teaching ( CDELT ) at Ain Shams Faculty of Education, Cairo, Egypt. She holds a Ph.D. degree from the University of California at Los Angeles, U.S. A. Since her graduation from Cairo University, she's been involved in the English teaching profession: as a teacher trainer, materials developer, and curriculum consultant to the Egyptian Ministry of Education. She is currently working on developing national standards for teachers, besides heading the content standards committee. She has just co-authored the first standards-based English language textbook for Egyptian primary one students.
